Lil Jon
- born Jonathan Smith in 1970 in Atlanta, Georgia
- is an African-American hip hop music artist
and rap album producer. He is best known as the
king of the hip hop style known as "crunk",
a combination of elements of Southern hip hop
and bass music.
Lil Jon graduated from Atlanta's Douglass High
School in 1988 and worked briefly as a club DJ
before his stint as an A&R man for So So Def
records. In 1996, Lil Jon joined forces with Big
Sam and Lil Bo, collectively known as The East
Side Boyz, to produce the album Get Crunk, Who
U Wit: Da Album. The song "Who You Wit"
became a club hit in Atlanta and proved be a pivotal
moment in the development of crunk.
In 2002, Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz released
Kings of Crunk. The single, "Get Low"
featuring the Ying Yang Twins became an international
hit. Lil Jon recently released his new album,
Crunk Juice, featuring the likes of Rick Rubin,
R. Kelly, Ice Cube, Usher, and Ludacris.
